The West Indies Cricket Board Nagico Super50 event concluded on 23rd January, with hosts Trinidad & Tobago defeating Barbados in the final.

The Nagico Super50 is a domestic one-day cricket competition in the West Indies and this year, they welcomed the ICC Americas Regional team for the first time.

A 15-man squad, plus five reserves, was selected following the ICC Americas Cricket Combine that took place in Indianapolis from 20th to 27th September.  Over 90 players took part in the Combine, while several hundred players were assessed as part of an online application process.

The Combine coaching staff included West Indies legend Courtney Walsh, former Indian international Venkatapathy Raju, internationally renowned American fielding coach Mike Young and several coaches from associate member countries within the ICC Americas region.

The tournament gave members in the Americas region (US, Canada, Cayman Islands & Bermuda) a chance to showcase their talents ahead of the CPL draft, where one player from the ICC Americas will be assigned to each franchise in this year’s Caribbean Premier League.

Despite not registering a win at the tournament, the ICC Americas can be extremely proud of their efforts during the Nagico Super50. Playing in a tough group, against seasoned international and first-class cricketers, the ICC Americas improved dramatically as the tournament progressed with competitive performances in games one, four and six.

Against Barbados (Game 1), the ICC Americas posted a below par total of 183, with only one notable performance from Alex Amsterdam, who hit an elegant 73. After some superb bowling though, Barbados found themselves at 125/6 in reply, before they regrouped and defeated the ICC Americas by four wickets.

In the return encounter (Game 4), the ICC Americas posted a competitive total of 202 against a stronger Barbados side, who welcomed back three Test bowlers, Jason Holder, Carlos Brathwaite and Jomel Warrican. Despite an improved performance by the ICC Americas, Barbados were simply too strong, getting over the line with six wickets to spare.

Playing their final match in Trinidad, the ICC Americas won the toss and opted to bat on a difficult track against a powerful Jamaican side. Looking to build on previous strong batting performances, the ICC Americas put the Jamaican bowling attack to the sword, with Ruvindu Gunesekera smashing a brilliant 87 at the top of the order. Needing a strong middle order performance, Kumar (43) and Wijeratne (45) set the platform for Hamza Tariq to finish off the innings with a superb 35 from 14 deliveries, leaving the ICC Americas with a solid total of 253. In reply, Jamaica were 218/9 requiring a further 36 runs for victory with only one wicket remaining. However, Jamaica won the game thanks to a match winning 24 from number 11, Marquino Mindley.

Despite being a difficult tournament for the ICC Americas, their manager Tom Evans said: “It was pleasing to see the way the team improved throughout the two weeks. We had two poor days where we didn’t show the required application, however, the fact that the players bounced back and showed they had learnt from their mistakes was important”.

Whilst the ICC Americas didn’t have the success they were desperately chasing in the tournament, the players should hold their heads high after some really spirited performances in the Nagico Super50.

Their ability and enthusiasm is why franchises will select one ICC Americas squad member in the CPL draft on 11th February 2016 in Barbados. With exciting players like Boomer Collins included in the draft, we hope it will begin a turnaround in associate fortunes within the region.
