U19 West Indies Cement Semi-Final Spot in Cricket World Cup

Skipper Shimron Hetmyer and Tevin Imlach hit superb half-centuries as the West Indies defeated Pakistan by five wickets, cementing their place in the semi-finals of the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in Bangladesh on Monday. The U19 World Cup gives players a chance to showcase their talents ahead of the CPL Player Draft 2016. Each franchise must include an U19 West Indies players in their squad, to showcase and nurture young talent in the region.

When the heat was on, Captain Shimron Hetmyer led from the front with a memorable half-century that helped West Indies chase down a competitive 227, with five wickets to spare.

After winning the toss in Fatullah, Pakistan opted to bat against a strong West Indies bowling attack. Replacing the injured Obed McCoy, Chemar Holder dismissed Pakistan’s skipper Zeeshan Malik and Shadab Khan inside the first six overs.

At 40-4 Pakistan needed a miracle and they found one in wicketkeeper Umair Masood who arrived at the crease in the 15th over, looking to rebuild the innings with Salman Fayyaz. As the pitch eased out considerably, Masood went on to hit a superb 113, in an innings that included 15 fours and two sixes before he was dismissed in the final over by Ryan John. Masood was supported well by Salman Fayyaz who scored an elegant 58*, rotating the strike effectively with Masood before the pair opened up smashing 82 runs off the final 10 overs. Their partnership helped Pakistan stage a remarkable recovery from 57 for 5 to a competitive 227-6.

In reply, the West Indies got off to the perfect start with openers Gidron Pope and Tevin Imlach hitting 45 in the first six overs. After Pope was dismissed for a quick fire 25, the Windies continued to play in true Caribbean flair, bringing up a 100 runs inside the first 16 overs. Looking on course for victory at 137-2, Tevin Imlach and Keacy Carty were then needlessly run out in quick succession, allowing Pakistan back into the game.

With Pakistan’s spinners bowling exceptionally well in the middles overs, the game was eagerly poised until Shamar Springer hit a superb run-a-ball 37, taking the game away from Pakistan. After Springer was dismissed by Gul, Goolie (26*) and Keemo Paul (24*) knocked off the remaining 38 runs with 10 overs to spare.

After the game had concluded, West Indies captain Shimron Hetmyer said: “This is a wonderful result for us, it feels good to be through to the semi-finals”.

Victory for the West Indies means they will now play tournament hosts Bangladesh in the second semi-final in Mirpur on Thursday. For more information about the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup, head over to our Twitter page and search #U19CWC
