A left-handed top-order batsman who can also keep wickets, Hetmyer established himself in the International circuit after captaining the Windies to their first U-19 World Cup title in 2015. As a batsman, he scored consecutive fifties in the knockout phase to take the Windies to the finals of the tournament.
He made his ODI debut for the Windies in 2017, and has scored 1000 runs in the format, including four centuries.
